Have you ever said this to yourself before? “I want to be healthy.” Guess what? People say that plenty of times, but they give up without even trying. It is probably because the idea of being healthy, and leading a healthy lifestyle does sound enticing but the process does not.

But guess what the good news is? It’s really not that hard. You just have to do it enough to where it becomes a habit, a routine. A lot of people say that they are not motivated enough, but you know what? Trust me, after you follow that routine for a few days where it becomes a habit, you will start to see changes. You will feel energized, lighter, cleaner and healthier. That is what is going to motivate you for the rest of your life. There a lot of people trying to lose those pounds and are singing the “I want to be healthy” tune. But the problem is that they are doing it wrong. They are taking pills and going on diets were they keep starving their body off of nutrients. That’s unhealthy and it does not work! It is a temporary fix. Just Temporary! To be healthy and to see permanent results you actually have to lead a healthy lifestyle. This includes mainly two things- eating healthy, and being active. That’s all there is to it. A lot of people think its hard. But seriously it is not. It is all in your mind. They are actually very fun. Once you start doing it and start seeing results, you will actually regret not starting sooner. It is a great feeling. It takes work. I know that. But guess what? You will see results, instantly. Besides, doing something that makes me feel better, and healthier, something that gives me so much more stamina, I am ready to do. You can do it too. Seriously, you can. You can start right now. All you have to do is, stop looking for reasons not to do it. Just do it and don’t give up too easy.

There is this saying, “where there is a will there is a way”. It Never gets old. Push yourself. You are in control of your body. You can make it or break it. Breaking it is easy. You know that too! When people graduate from college they have two options as far as work goes, they can go into the private sector or into the public sector. Those interested in pursuing a professional career in the private sector can choose whether they want to work in a privately owned company, or to become an entrepreneur and set up their own business. Most find this course of action better, but there are also those who are more tempted to go into the public sector. Those who live in the United States and decide to pursue a career in the public sector, unless elected into office, they must go through the proper channels, and if chosen, will become members of the US Federal Civil Service.

Now, in case you do not know what the Federal Civil Service is, the first thing that you need to know is that it comprehends all appointive positions in the government’s three branches (executive; legislative; judicial). Anyone working in the Federal Government, be it an office clerk or a presidential advisor, belongs in the Federal Civil Service, so as far as opportunities go, it is evident that it has many to offer college graduates. However, it is important that you at least have some basic understanding about the Federal Civil Service before getting into the sector; it is important that you know some things about how the service works because even though it does present several opportunities, materializing them is easier said than done.

The service is comprised of three different services; they are: the Competitive Service, the Excepted Service, and the Senior Executive Service. In essence, these three services are different in what has to do with requirements and procedures that any applicant must undergo before actually being appointed. For example, in what concerns positions within the Competitive Service, all applicants and employees must conform to the laws prescribed by the Office of Personnel Management; the laws delineate processes, procedures, and requirements that apply in everything that goes from appointments to promotions. In other words, the Federal Government is completely subject to laws and regulations establishes the Competitive Service. This, however, is not the case for the Excepted Service. Law in this service prescribes few requirements and procedures, and for the most part it is up to each agency to establish its norms, procedures, and requirements when making appointments. Third comes the Senior Executive Service, and any requirements and procedures are established unilaterally by individual agencies (although they must be based on minimum requirements that the law prescribes). Often, it is mentioned that the present is more important than the future. But the opposite is true when it comes to having big dreams for your career. What most students do now is just go to school to learn and then look for a job later, but rare are those who are prudent in every step they take. Some have the gift of forward thinking so they’re able to accomplish what is needed so that they can attain their goals more easily after graduation. There is no guarantee that students will success in their professional careers. However, the chances of that happening will increase if they exert more effort in planning and investing their efforts in what must be done while they are in school.

If you are one of those students who wish to be more certain of their future, then you’re probably asking what particular things you should do to ensure success. Say, you desire to work abroad where there are better opportunities. But have you given much thought to the fact that the culture and language there might be different to what you’ve been accustomed to? If you’re not able to adapt to those right away, then they might become factors that will hinder success.

The More Language Skills, the Better

Learning an additional language does not seem to be a necessity now. However, you might be thankful later on that you took the time to learn it in school rather than struggling to do so while working. Jobs requiring cross-cultural communication become easier if you are fluent in their native language. In case you get sent to a different country in your future job, knowing the basics of that country’s language will prove to be of great help. The transition to a different working environment becomes less difficult if you know how to deal with locals. Everyday task such as shopping and commuting won’t be such a bother if you don’t have to consult a translation dictionary and if you don’t get misunderstood all the time. The more interaction with other people that you have to do, the greater the language skills that you have to possess. When confronted with the choice between working in the public sector and working in the private sector, most people decide to go private. Why? Well, for most people the private sector holds the best jobs (which of course translate into better salaries, benefits, commodities, etc.) and the greater opportunities in terms of vertical mobility. However, there are those who believe that the public sector is also worthwhile; these people are confident that they can achieve all that they could achieve in the private sector, and then some. In all truth, the public sector is not all bad; certainly not like some people make it out to be. In the United States, for example, despite the fact that there are certain positions in the Federal Civil Service that are less than appealing, there are also some Federal Agencies that offer extremely attractive jobs. These jobs, apart from being handsomely rewarded (both in terms of salaries and associated benefits), create an environment that keeps workers happy and committed to their jobs.

Several government agencies are places where skilled, or specialized, labor, is seldom required; these agencies require more technical competencies, and given that there are millions who can perform in a way that meets expectations, there is no real incentive to offer major benefits or salaries. However, there are certain agencies that do require specialized labor, and what is more, they usually also require the utmost efficiency and commitment from all employees. It is not a secret that a happy worker works harder and better, and believe it or not, some Federal agencies, both large and small, go out of their ways to make their employees happy.

When talking about large agencies, perhaps the one that most satisfies its employees is the Nuclear Regulatory Commission; employee satisfaction peaked last year at 81.8%. Closely following the NRC came the Government Accountability Office, with an employee satisfaction of 81.6%. Now, moving on to small Federal agencies, the one that most accomplished in terms of customer satisfaction was the Surface Transportation Board, which registered an employee satisfaction that peaked at 86.8%. Another small Federal agency that registered impressively high employee satisfaction levels was the Overseas Private Investment Corporation, which peaked at 85.5%.

There are other Federal Agencies that also have managed to increase employee satisfaction, and this has surely made young college graduates think twice before making a final decision about whether they prefer to work in the private sector or in the public sector. Peace Corps, the Congressional Budget Office, the Department of State, the Department of Justice, and the Intelligence Community are also Federal agencies to strive to create more inviting work environments and offer better benefits to their workers. Now, this in no way means that the public sector is better than the private sector, or vice versa.

However, it does mean that in today’s world, Federal agencies are beginning to realize that in order to guarantee efficiency, transparency, and commitment from their workers, they have to offer certain incentives that keep their spirits and their motivation up. Workers look for security, vertical mobility, and increased financial possibilities that may lead to a better quality of life. As well, they are interested in working in an amiable environment, in a place where they can have some breathing space, some autonomy, and some leisure. As long as you can attain this, you will attain the best possible labor; the private sector has known this for a while, but it appears that the public sector is starting to follow suit.

The field of international relations has become increasingly important in today’s world; countries are more interdependent than ever as former barriers on trade and the flow of knowledge/information have disappeared, thus making it important for a given country or society, to not only understand what is going on in the world, but also the ways in which it must deal with other countries/societies. Professionals that engage in international relations are usually responsible for protecting their nations’ interests; these professionals who study international relations are diplomats. Given that the field has become quite important, especially now that globalization advances at an unprecedented rate, many students begin to pay attention to international relations, and naturally, to diplomacy. How can a student go about becoming a diplomat? This is the question that we propose to answer subsequently.

Theory is important for an individual that is interested in studying, and working in, international relations. In his opinion, theory is inevitably because it is important for a person to understand what is going on in the world; there are always many things going on in the world and in order for a person to understand them and what they signify, it is inevitable to have some theoretical knowledge in politics (this knowledge, of course, must be explicit; implicit knowledge is not enough because it is knowledge that an individual is unaware of, and unable to use). However, despite having sufficient knowledge (explicit knowledge) that will enable an individual to understand what is actually happening in the world, it is impossible for predictions to be made about what may or may not happen; strategic interaction makes prediction impossible because of the ever-changing strategies that all economic/political agents implement. As well, it is important that students be outgoing, that they interest in others’ problems, and that they are flexible. Third, anyone interested in becoming a diplomat must be fluent in more languages than one. English is naturally the top language that a diplomat needs to master, but other languages that are important to grasp are Chinese, Urdu, and Arabic. (more…)
